Gordie Howe International Bridge

Beginning in 2019, Access Engineering (AE), which was later acquired by Hennessey Engineers (Hennessey) in 2023, was part of the Bridging North America (BNA) team as a subconsultant to AECOM. In 2024, Hennessey was hired directly by BNA.

As part of the BNA team, as a subconsultant to AECOM, AE prepared the maintenance of traffic (MOT) plans for work on the Michigan Interchange. Staging plans were prepared for work primarily impacting I-75 and the I-75 ramps, the northbound and southbound I-75 Service Drives, and bridges/roadways crossing I-75.

Working directly for BNA, Hennessey prepared MOT plans for the remaining work at the Michigan Interchange. This included work on M-85 and local roads and remaining work on I-75 to re-open the freeway to traffic. Beginning in 2025, Hennessey added Michael Baker as a subconsultant to assist BNA with providing a dedicated Traffic Engineer to coordinate the daily Lane Closure Notifications and prepare as-needed plans on I-75 and the local roads. MOT plans were prepared by both Hennessey and Michael Baker for BNA to perform miscellaneous work such as installing over 20 overhead signs on I-75 and the surrounding freeways, placing permanent pavement markings, lighting on pedestrian bridges, bridge painting, and installing truss signs.

Unique Challenges: Coordinating the stage plans under the design-build delivery was challenging given the fast-paced and constantly evolving work to complete the project. Continuous coordination with the team members in the field to develop the staging was extremely important. Staging plans for some of the state's busiest freeways were required, including complex staging on I-75 in the vicinity of both the entrance ramp from the Ambassador Bridge and the entrance ramp from I-96.
