I-96 Flex Route from Kent Lake Road to I-275

The MDOT I-96 Flex Route from Kent Lake Road to the I-275/I-696/M-5 interchange reconstruction project is approximately 12 miles of mainline pavement, shoulders, median barrier wall, including profile changes and drainage updates. The project includes the installation of an Active Traffic Management (ATM) system using Lane Control Signs and ramp metering, along with work on 11 bridges.

(A Flex Route is an active traffic management system that promotes safety and helps manage rush hour and seasonal traffic congestion by utilizing the median shoulder as a temporary fourth lane.)

Hennessey Engineers project managers (from newly acquired Access Engineering, Inc., Oct. 2023) prepared the Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) plans for this project which were designed based on three years of construction and included two winter shutdown periods. The MOT plans include a significant amount of temporary pavement design and temporary drainage design. Hennessey Engineers continues to provide as-needed design assistance during construction of this project
