Plum Avenue Sanitary Relief Sewer

The City of Southgate experienced frequent sewer surcharging in the southern third of the City. Using funds from an S2 Grant Program, they completed an in-depth study of the existing sanitary sewer system. The study found that several existing sanitary sewers were undersized and a relief sewer was necessary to provide overflow relief and additional capacity to the existing sewer system.

The relief sewer was constructed along Plum Avenue from McCann to Fordline Roads, and along Poplar Street from Plum to Leroy Roads. ADS SaniTite HP pipe was used on the project as a new, innovative, cost effective alternative to traditional concrete sewer pipe.

Due to the depths and location of the sanitary sewer, the entire roadway had to be removed and replaced in most areas, however residential disturbance was kept to a minimum by continually updating residents on construction activities.

Hennessey Engineers provided design, plan development, and construction management services. CI Contracting, Inc. completed the underground work, and GM & Sons, Inc. completed the concrete work as a subcontractor.
